Perfect

January 3, 2003 will be remembered as a ‘perfect’ day for Australia Test cricket captain Steve Waugh. Under immense pressure to preserve his Test career, and with the Aussies struggling against England in the first innings of the 5th Test, he produced another of his renowned, ‘back-to-the-wall’ efforts, scoring a century with a cracking boundary off the final ball of the day.
Waugh’s innings was far greater than any scriptwriter could have imagined. Crammed with courage and grit, brimming with elegance and historical milestones, his journey to triple figures had the packed S.C.G. house on its feet more often than not.
Entering the fray with the score at 3 for 56, Waugh went to work immediately, savaging England’s bowlers to blaze his way to a half century in only 61 balls. He reached his 50 with a magnificent cover drive for four which was described as the shot of the series. 19 runs later he received another standing ovation as he became only the third person in history to score more than 10,000 Test runs, then continued his assault, moving into the nineties as the ‘shadow’ of stumps formed across the ground.
On 98 he found himself facing the last ball of the day. What happened next could only be described as one of the most amazing and magical finishes to a day’s cricket. With every spectator and millions of television viewers holding their breath, Waugh sent the final ball from England off-spinner Richard Dawson crashing through the covers and into the S.C.G. fence, to bring up a remarkable century, and equal Sir Donald Bradman’s Australian record of 29 Test tons, which had stood since 1948.
The reaction from Waugh and the crowd was unforgettable, and will live forever, through acclaimed cricket photographer Patrick Eagar, whose image of that precise moment has inspired this outstanding new release, ‘Perfect’.

The latest in the series of Legends’ ‘Black and Whites’ designs and personally signed by Steve Waugh, ‘Perfect’ has all the inherent charm of black and white photography and has been reproduced as large as possible within the format to capture the exhilaration of that dramatic moment. Accompanying the photograph is text detailing the event and the edition.
Exacting quality, unquestionable authenticity.
